8 Things to keep in mind before renting a car in Greece

Why do it?

Renting a car will give you a lot more freedom to explore one of the beautiful islands of the country, but also the mainland without too much hassle. This is a way more convenient way of traveling than relying on public transport that is actually known to be questionable in Greece.

What to expect?

In the majority of countries in Europe, including Greece, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. You use the left to overtake and most of the same rules that apply in your country will also apply in Greece. For example, drinking and driving is illegal, you need to wear a seat belt, and even road regulations are very similar.

Paying for Tolls

Major roads in the country are filled with toll booths. You will have to pay for each one of them while traveling, but the good thing is that they are usually very cheap, just around $2-$3. Still, if you travel a long distance you may end up paying more, so make sure you calculate the price for toll booths before you leave.

Car Rent Requirements

To be able to rent a car, you need to be 21 years of age, if you are under 25 you need to pay up more. The oldest you can be to even be able to rent a car is 70. Keep in mind that you will need to present an IDP Greece recognizes if you are not a citizen from the EU.

Rent a Car Paperwork

If you are from the EU, you are allowed to rent a car just with your driving license. However, you will need to present your International Driving Permit alongside your driving license if you’re from any other country. You are required to carry all of the paperwork with you all the time while using the rental car.

When to Rent?

Generally, it is recommended to make your reservation in advance. The best thing to do is to seek a rental company in the place you’re staying and contact them to organize the renting upfront. This especially goes if you’re planning to visit the country during the summer season.

Prices

A big factor in renting a car is the price, obviously. Luckily, renting a car in Greece can be quite cheap, and it might be even cheaper if you were coming with your own car. You will get a really good value for the money you’re paying, considering this is a popular tourist destination. Use a comparison site to choose the option that fits your budget the best.

What car to choose?

There are no general recommendations regarding the type of car you should choose. However, to help you make your decision, we can just mention that traffic in a large city like Athens can be a nightmare. Therefore, if this is your destination, it is better to opt for a small car, just for the sake of convenience.
