by photographer Martyna Kulczycka
Martyna Kulczycka is an independent photographer from Poland. She likes coffee, empty beaches and her polaroid camera. She likes to get to know people who look at the world differently and is constantly on the road with her camera.
During her one year stay on Aegina Island, Martyna wanted to capture in her images a rhythm that has become totally normal for the people living on the island: the big transformation of the Aegina beaches from "winter beaches" to "summer beaches". A transformation that the islanders probably will not notice any more while on the other hand, the tourists coming only in the summer months will never be able see.
Even on Aegina island, where the weather seems to be the same all the time and holidays seem to last forever - there also appears to be a winter time ...... of course, totally different from her home country with temperatures down to around -20C and lots of snow. On Aegina, winter is a state of mind. The Aegina beaches appear to be most of the year abandoned, dirty and forgotten. And .... at the end of May, in just one weekend, they are metamorphosed into tourist attractions ready to welcome thousands of people during the summer months. From half of September, the beaches transform slowly back to winter mode.
In the above album you can see Aeginitissa -, Aqua Loca -, Marathonas A - & Marathonas B beach captured by Martyna in the period autumn 2010 until summer 2011. A very interesting gallery!
