Aegina island beach cleaning

Island beach cleaning 2011

On sunday 10 April, we're organising a big beach cleaning on the island, which will start at 10 o'clock at the various beaches around the island. Our goal is to mobilize lots of people: locals, expats, young, old, retired, clubs, schools & organisations. When we have many hands available the job will be done in only a few hours and the result will be clean beach sites all around the island. We will be able to lay ourselves down on the beaches without feeling ashamed and disturbed by the sight of plastics, old shoes etc. Let's take care of our own environment!

What and when: Aegina island beach cleaning on sunday 10 April 2011 - 10 o'clock

Why cleaning?
Our beaches are at the moment full of garbage and plastics that have washed ashore this winter, some beach sites have plastics that have even been there for years. Normally the beach cleaning starts at the end of May as the beach bars start to prepare for their opening on June 1st. Why shall we wait such a long time, don't we all prefer the sight of a clean beach? More important: "Why do we have dirty beaches in wintertime at all?" The beaches of Aegina are one of the main tourist attractions of this island and dirty beaches don't sell well and it is not the way to attract tourists........ especially in times of crisis. After all Greece's bad publicity in the foreign media of last year, it is time for some positive action! Celebrate Easter on a clean Aegina island!

Why do WE have to do this job and not "THEM"?
Already we received questions as: "Why it is up to us to do the job?" and "Why are the beach bar owners/ tenants not doing the job". We can simply answer with: at the moment, nobody is doing the job during the winter months and this has been going on for years. Regulations concerning the cleaning of beaches during the whole year would be recommended but are not available at the moment. The municipality has a lack of money and a lack of hands. The beach bars normally will only start cleaning at the end of May (some exceptions here) and the unorganised beaches may be cleaned by locals and visitors from Athens when they come for their summer holiday. We can either keep complaining, show pictures in newspapers and keep on receiving bad criticism from tourists about the filthy beaches, or we can take action and do it OURSELVES. Let's give an example to our children and show them how simple and inexpensive some solutions can be! What would for example the Aegina Fisitiki Fest be without the intensive contributions of lots of volunteers?

The municipality of Aegina
We have the support of the Mayor, and he and his team will also help cleaning that day. They will provide us with personnel, plastic heavy duty bags and they will take care of the transport of the bags to Skotini.

Which beaches do we clean?
We will clean as many beaches as possible, of course depending on the number of volunteers we have. Each beach will have its team. We will organise the teams and take care of logistics. Beaches that we want to clean are: Agia Marina, Aegina Avra beach, Aegina Kolona beach, Aeginitissa beach, Aqua Loca, Marathonas A & B, Kamares area, Klima, Portes, Sarpa, Souvala Loutra, Agii coast area, Vagia beach. We will also try to mobilize the beach bar/ taverna owners to start their cleaning on April 10th. In the form below you can write down which beach you prefer to help cleaning.

What about our forests?
Yes, lots of cleaning has to be done too in the forest. Unfortunately most of the cleaning in the forest has to be done with bigger equipment to lift all the rubbish and baza (our hands will not be enough). We will not forget about it and we will try to organise this in the next few months.
