Spring is in the air, and like Greeks worldwide, the people
on Aegina are preparing to celebrate their Pascha or
Greek Orthodox Easter. Considered the most important holiday
on the Greek calendar, Orthodox Easter’s
uniqueness lies more in the week leading up the event rather than
the actual religious holiday.
Click
here for a further reading written
by Anne Yannoulis about the customary rituals happening in the
Orthodox Holy Week.

Since
January 2007 Aegina island has a new mayor, Panagiotis
Koukoulis. In the few months that have past, we have seen
that things really are changing in the right direction. With
the slogan "The Solutions are in Our Own Hands" the
party aims to keep Aegina as a nice and healthy place to live.
They try to activate the citizens of Aegina to participate in
the process to become not only aware of the existing problems
on the island, but even more important to show them that they
can easily contribute themselves to solve some of the problems.
For example: in the near future everybody will have to seperate
their waste, there is a active campaign to make people aware
of ways to use the water in a more economical way and there is
active policy to have less cars in the centre of Aegina. Soon
you can read more about the plans of the new mayor and his party
on aeginagreece.com in English. Until then you can read the latest
news in Greek on
their
online blog, their
website, or

read the latest info brochure (in Greek). |

If
you are a regular visitor of Aegina you must have noticed that
there are less stray dogs on the streets. Due to the continues
hard work of ANIMAL RESPECT (the private organisation on Aegina
who takes care of the local animals on Aegina and AgistrI) lots
of strays have found new homes abroad and in Greece. In the
past years their dogshelter has turned into a professional shelter
where abondoned dogs have a safe and clean place to wait for
their second or sometimes third chance in life. Regulary vets
visit the shelter to sterilise, castrate or operate dogs and
cats free of charge. The loving way of taking care of
the animals and the endless energy this small group of people
is putting in ANIMAL RESPECT is admirable and unfortunately highly
underestimated by the local government on the island. If you
want to learn more about ANIMAL RESPECT, if you want to home
one of their lovely dogs, or want to support them by donating
money, visit their
website (in
German). Soon you will find more information about this fantastic
organisation on this website in English. Please help them so
they can continue doing their great job!
You can also read
more about ANIMAL RESPECT in Dutch
on the website of Wereld Asielen
(international support organisation of strays).
