Aegina Town

Aegina Town
Aegina town is a picturesque place, which is lively all year through. Wander through little streets behind the boulevard where you can find nice shops. Visit the fish market and try the fish taverna's behind the fishmarket. Sit down at one of the terraces on the boulevard and watch the ferries and yachts in front of you.


Agios Nektarios church and Agia Triada Monastery

The church is named after its founder, Agios Nektarios, who died in 1920 and was canonised in 1961. His relics are preserved in the first chapel of the Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Monastery, next to the church. "Agios Nektarios" is located in the middle of the island at a 10 minute car ride from Aegina town or Aghia Marina. Open daily.


Afaia Temple

Afaia Temple
The Afaia temple is one of the most beautiful classical temples in Greece and also the oldest surviving. It stands on the top of a pine-clad hill above Aghia Marina from where you have a marvelous view to the mainland. The first temple on the site (700 BCE) was dedicated to Afaia, a deity from Crete.

The hill of Kolona, located at a 5 minute walk from the port of Aegina town, was inhabited from prehistoric times through the classical period. Extensive walls and foundations have been discovered and excavations are still in process. On the site you will find also a museum.

A cylindric house, with twelve openings: the light that enters the room produces a twelve part panorama image of the outside world, upside down and reversed on a semitransparent screen. This building was part of the Light & Image exibition which took place in may 2003.


Christos Capralos museum

The Christos Capralos museum, lies on the northwestern side of Aegina island in the area of Plakakia, on the coastal road. The works exhibited in the museum are of marble, Aeginean porous stone and wood; there are also exhibits of paintings, terracotta and ceramics.


Faneromeni church

Faneromeni church
At a 15 minutes walk from the port of Aegina town, there is a small underground church dating from the 13th century. The icon of the Virgin in the second chapel, was found in the cave behind the alter.
The underground church is locked and only open for visitors on certain times.


Flowers

Flowers
When you visit the island in springtime, from March until the second week of May, you will experience a very green island with an enormous beauty of all kinds of flowers and blosoming trees. Go out walking in the mountains and discover the big variety of flowers.


Hellenic Wildlife Hospital

Hellenic Wildlife Hospital
The Hellenic Wildlife Hospital on Aegina treats 3000 to 4500 injured every year, poisoned or orphaned wild animals from all over Greece aiming to release them back into the wild. The hospital is open to public from 9:30 in the morning to 7:30 in the evening.


Omorfi Eklesia

Omorfi eklesia, the "beautiful church", is a tiny 13th century chapel, its interiour completely covered with frescoes. Located just outside Aegina town, in the area of Asomati. The church is kept locked, if you want to visit apply to the Aegina museum.


Monastery of Chrysoleonitissa

Monastery of Chrysoleonitissa
The monastery of Chrysoleonitissa is now a convent and lies high in the central hills in the middle of the island. You can reach it by heading along the road which starts opposite Aghios Nektarios. The last 300 metres you will have to walk.


Moni island

Moni island
Visit the island of Moni opposite Aegina. Swim in it's fantastically clean waters and enjoy the beautiful nature with its animals, the only inhabitants of the island. Moni lies at a short distance from the village of Perdika from where you can take a small boat to go to Moni island during the summer months. Return ticket € 5.


Mount Oros

Sights on Aegina island: Mount Oros
Mount Oros, 532 metres, sanctuary of Hellanios Zeus. A tiny chapel crowns the highest mountain on the island and on its lower slopes stand the church of Taxiarchis on an ancient site. Beside it rise a wide stepped road and a plygonal wall of the hellenistic period.


Palaio chora

The ruins of this medieval city cover the hill behind the Monastery of Aghios Nektarios. This is where the islanders used to take refuge from pirates and invasions. Once a small city of 300 churches, some 32 frescoed churches (13th to 17th century) are still preserved.


Pacheia Rachi

Visit the quiet old village of Pacheia Rachi. Situated next to Mount Oros at 225 metres. Wander through the few little streets and see some really old and some very nice newly built houses. From the village you can experience some amazing panoramic views.


Perdika

Perdika
On the southern edge of the island lies the small fishing village of Perdika. This is perhaps one of the most picturesque spots on the island, and also a good place to eat fish. In the harbour you will find many nice restaurants and cafes all overlooking the sea.


Tower of Markellos

Tower of Markellos
The pink Tower, built in 1802 and located some street behind the boulevard of Aegina town, is the Tower of Markellos. The Tower housed in 1826 Kapodistrias' government until the Governor's Residence, known as the "Palace of Barbayannis" was built. The tower is only open for visitors when there is an exhibition.


Waterpark

Waterpark
For those visitors of Aegina island with children, who are looking for some water fun, a visit to The Aegina Water Park is a good option. Located on the road to Marathonas in the area of Faros, at a 5 minute car distance from Aegina town. The waterpark is open from the end of May until the end of September.
