Like
many other Greek islands, the capital of Aegina takes its name
from the name of the island itself, it is situated on the west
side of the Island. Most of the ferries and charter boats will
arrive here. A lovely town that is lively all year through. Lots
of little streets to wander and shop, many places to sit,
eat and drink. |

Aghia
Marina is the centre of tourism during the summer months. There
is a wide sandy beach, it is surrounded by a huge pine forest and
offers a big variety of accommodation and entertainment. It derived
its name from the little church of Aghia Marina located
in the south part of the bay and is celebrated on the 17th of July.

Aghii
(saints) lies on the coastal road, east of Souvala. The houses
here have a panoramic view over the mainland from Athens to Salamina.
The coast line is rocky & beautiful. Aghii has a picturesque
little harbour. The church of Agios Apostolos Krispos, who was
the founder and first bishop of the church of Aegina, is located
a little bit up the hill. |

Just
before Perdika you find Aeginitissa. The houses are built on the
hill from where you have a splendid view on Moni, Agistri and the
Peloponnese. There is beach surrounded with huge eucalyptus trees
and a fish taverna right next to the sea. Aeginitissa is one of
the most popular areas at the moment. Lot of building is going
on. |

Attached
to Aghia Marina is Alones. The houses in Alones are located on
the left and right hand site of the road that leads from Aghia
Marina, to Aegina. There are some famous tavernas which serve traditional
Greek food. |

Located
high in the mountains. Anitseo can be reached from the road from
Portes or from the road Aegina - Tzikides - Pacheia
Rachi. Anitseo has a lot of old traditional houses, some
new stone built ones and an old mill. There a 2 tavernas that are
really populair in the weekends. |

Asomatos
is situated just
outside Aegina, on the road to Aghia Marina. This road divides
the village in two. There is a big church and lots of chapels as
well as ancient tombs. The traditional
taverna Vatsoulias, only open 3 nights per week is
highly recommended If you want to experience Greek life. |

Small
"deserted" village on the east coast of the island. Until
recently you could only reach it by foot. The village consists
of a few stone built houses, some of which have been restored.

On
the road from Aghia Marina to Portes you will find after a couple
of kilometres a sign pointing to the road to Kilindras. The village
consists of only a few houses. Some houses are inhabited and some
houses need to be totally restored. From
the village you have a panoramic sea view and view on
Portes. |

Take
the road up the hill past the village of Pacheia Rachi and turn
left. This road leads to Lazarides. A small typical Greek village
which is still inhabited. |

3 Kilometres
from the port of Aegina you will find the village of Kipseli. Kipseli
is prosperous, having extensive pistachio and almond orchards.
Here you find a great number of
byzantine and post-byzantine chapels. In the centre of Kipseli
you will find the main square with church. |

The
area where the church of Aghios Nektarios is located. The church
is a major landmark on the Aegina. Yearly thousands of people visit
the cathedral of Aghios Nektarios and the monastery next to it,
where you can visit the former house and tomb of the the famous
Aghios Nektarios. |

Halfway
on the road from Aegina town to Perdika you will find the populair
village of Marathonas. Most of the houses in Marathonas are built
upon the mountain from where you have an amazing view over the
sea. Marathonas has 2 sandy organised beaches with restaurants
direct on the beach. It has a few shops and a church. |

From
the monastery of Aghios Nektarios the main road from Aegina
to Aghia Marina continues through the fertile area around
the large village of Mesagros (the middle fields). There
are several pottery works in and around the village. |

The
island of Moni is situated opposite the village of Perdika.
Enjoy it's fantastically clean waters and beautiful nature
with its animals, the only inhabitants of the island. In summertime
there is a beach bar, sunbeds and
umbrellas. During the summer season, small boats will take you
from Perdika to Moni in 10 minutes. |

The
quiet old village of Pacheia Rachi next to Mount
Oros at 225 metres consists of a lot of old deserted and new
stone built houses. This historic settlement contributed
to the revolution of 1821 and is located in a region of exceptional
natural beauty. You will find the in the middle of the village
the church of Dionysios.

Opposite
the church of Aghios Nektarios, you will find the hill with
36 churches. Once this was a medieval settlement, with lots
of houses and 350 churches. It was a safe place protected
against pirates You can climb this hill by foot
and discover the old little churches. Some have painting
inside, almost all are open to visit. |

On
the Southern edge of the island lies the small fishing village
of Perdika. This is perhaps one of the most picturesque spots
on the island and still has the characterictics of the Aegean
style of square houses and narrow streets. Many tavernas
to eat fish. From here you can take a small boat to the island
of Moni. |

If
you follow the road from Aghia Marina in southern direction
you will get to Portes. Here you will find peace and quietness.
In summertime it's a bit more lively. There are some good traditional
restaurants, especially when you want to eat fish on a unique
location. Portes has a little harbour and a pebbled beach. |

Take
the road from
Perdika up the hill, you will arrive in the village
of Sfendouri. At a level of 240 metres above sea level you
experience the most amazing panoramic views of Aegina. Stone
built houses and old terraced hill sides with olive trees.

Souvala
can be reached directly by ferry from Piraeus or it can easily
be found by taking the coast road north and east from Aegina
Town for about 10 km. Until about the 1950s it was
simply a fishing village but over the last 50 years has grown
in response to tourism in the area. Souvala retains
the atmosphere of Greece. |

If
you take the road from Aegina to Portes, you will pass Tzikides.
It's an area which has become very populair during the past
years for building houses. As it used to be 6 years ago a quiet
deserted area, it is now a area full of big villa's and construction
going on. The views from Tzikides are panoramic and superb! |

On
the north coast, east of Souvala lies Vagia, it has a harbour
and an organised sandy beach with some tavernas right on the
beach. In the small village, you will find accommodation and
some Greek tavernas. This area was also inhabited in
antiquity, as has been proven by some archaeological finds. |

Vathi
is built on the foot of the hill Dragonera. It used to be a
agricultural and low populated area, but it has been developed
rapidly after 1950 when Souvala became a holiday resort.
Archeological finds have proven that the area has an age-old
history. The houses on the hill have a nice panoramic
view. |

South
of Anitseo, situated on a hillside, looking east to Attiki
and south towards the islands of Hydra and Poros. The villages
can be reached if you take the road, next to the church in
Anitseo. |

The
area of Vrochia is situated on the left hill side just before
Marathonas. Below at the water side, there is a small harbour
with fishing boats and you will find next to the harbour
right on the beach the church of Aghios Vasilis. |
AREAS

Nice
and quiet area enclosed through Aegina town, Kipseli and the
area of Livadi. Archeological excavators have found relics
and tombs of warriors who took part in the battle of Salamis
(402 BC). |

Leaving Aegina
in southern direction on the coastal road you will pass Faros.
You see some mansions on the left, a hotel, a couple
of pensions, some restaurants, a bouzoukia place and the waterpark.
Faros has many fields with pistachio trees and the area behind
the coastal road is a pleasant quiet area to live. |

Kamares,
situated on the north coast, east of Kazantzaki. The area became
more populair by the 2 beaches (Kamares and Prosinemo) that
are operated in summer. Lots of coves, beautiful swimming. |

The
area of Kazantzaki is part of the area of Livadi and is named
after the house (the stone house with blue fences) of Nikos
Kazatzakis, author of "Zorba the Greek" which is
located on the edge.. |

Kavouropetra
is the area where you find all the boatyards on the north side
of the island. |
 |
Small
bay and deserted beach surrounded by beautiful houses on
the south part of the island. On the hills of Klidi you find
lots of beautiful new villas, as the area of Klidi became in
recent years quite populair. From Klidi you have panoramic
views to the Peloponnese and Methana. |

Next
to Klidi and below the village of Sfendouri the area is called
Klima. In summertime the sandy beach is organised with sunbeds
and has a beach bar. The water is crystal clear and in the
weekend lots of yachts are moored in the bay. Also, Klima is
becoming a populair for building villa's. |

Above
Vrochia the area is called Koutalou. Recently, some large villas
are being built in this area which used to be totally uninhabited.

Lefki
(white) used to be called mavri (black). A residential area
close to Aegina. The road to Tzikides leads through Lefki. |

The
present "industrial area" of Aegina is located at the Leondi
sea side. Up the hill a small residential area. Leondi has
an industrial harbour. Water is being brought to the island
by ship and a big storage tank is located in Leondi. |

Beautiful
area on the west coast, 1.5 Km from Aegina town. Find some
huge mansions and the Christos Kapralos museum with in front
the statue of "The Mother". There are some tiny bays
with sandy beaches where you can swim and a nice taverna on
the sea side. |

A
very nice spot to swim, located just after Vagia. Follow the
small coastal road in the village to the right. The street
is a dead end street as it ends at the entry fence of the navy
basis. In front of the fence you will find a path leading to
the sea. The crystal clear water, the views to the island
(nisida) and mainland are a pleasure. |

Before
you make the right turn to Tzikides you will see Pagoni on
your left hand side. Located on the slope of a hill overlooking
the Peloponnese. |

Just
north of Aegina town, this upmarket residential area. Walking
distance to the sea. The lighthouse of Aegina is located at
the Plakakia seaside. |

Opposite
the big church of Aghios Nectarios is a road leading up
to the Monastery of Chrysoleonitissa. Half way you can turn
left to a dirt road, here you are in the area of Psachni.
Only a few old houses, only one inhabited, beautiful
hillsides fully covered with flowers in springtime. Amazing

Between
the area of Pagoni and Tzikides, the area of Skotini is situated.
It's a hill side with at the bottom a small area where the
municipality used to park its trucks. At present Skotini
is in the news because of the new industrial cement factory
that has been planned to move overthere. Further

north east cape of the island is called Tourlos. The navy has
a base in Tourlos, because of this, is not totally accessible
for the public. |
