When
Aegina briefly became the capital of newly liberated Greece,
in 1828, philhellenes from all over the world flocked to the
island. One of these was the wife of the Belgian Consul, Lady
Egerton. As a step to help the island’s standard of living,
she founded a school to teach lace-making to the local women
at Harilao Trikoupi’s house in Faros. By Louisa

| Who's Name Day
is it today? |
|
According to the Greek Orthodox tradition, nearly every day
of the year is dedicated to a Christian saint or Martyr. When
someone is named after one of those saints, that day becomes
their "name day" and, traditionally, is celebrated.
In Greece the "name day" is even more important than
the birthday.
