The theme ECO is hot around the world. People are seriously worried
about what will happen with our health, environment and
global warming if we keep doing what we are doing at the moment.
Slowly, people in Greece are getting
more aware of the need of taking care of these things. Also on
Aegina the ECO theme has established itself, as a theme that needs
to be taken seriously, otherwise things will definitely head
in the wrong direction. In almost every issue of the local newspapers,
the subject ECO is mentioned and even the BBC television took notice
of the Aegina water shortage problem and made a documentary about it.
Still, a lot can be done on Aegina to preserve the island.
On this page, we will focus on
the environmental and health issues concerning Aegina. The ECO items
are coloured Green and the Health items purple.

Environmentalists warn that an ecologically
sensitive area of Aegina could be endangered by the relocation
of one of the island's two cement plants. PROTECTING
an area of undoubted natural beauty and a valuable source of
underground water, or servicing people's insatiable need for
concrete?

Eco
Week is an initiative that started three years ago, in order to
raise awareness, to inform and to suggest practical solutions in
daily life that are friendly to the environment. |

Since
spring of 2007, the people of Aegina have to seperate their waste.
Please throw your plastic, paper, glass and metal in the blue
containers and household waste in the regular
grey container. Do not throw garden or building waste in the containers! |

The
BBC made a documentary about the water shortage problem
on Aegina which was broadcast on 22 april 2007. "Greece
faces water crisis" The people of Greece
(especially on Aegina) are being urged to conserve more water than
usual, because of low winter rainfall levels." BBC
reporter Malcolm Brabant made film shots in Athens, on the
water ship (that supplies Aegina with water daily), also he interviewed
several people on Aegina and in Athens. Click

Pistachios
in the diet can significantly reduce cholesterol and help prevent
narrowing of the arteries, according to researchers. One or two
handfuls of the nuts can make a big enough difference to lower
the risk of heart disease, say scientists. One or two handfuls
of Pistachios a day can lower the risk of heart disease. |

As
a native Californian, (where, for those who don't know it,
smoking has been outlawed anywhere but in one's home--if you
are the owner) I thought it logical that I be the one to raise
the issue of the Greeks and their love affair with cigarettes.
