Marathonas

On Marathonas Beach it is possible to suddenly realise that you are actually living what you dreamed about 6 months before in the cold winter.  Golden sand, crystal clear shallow waters, fantastic views.  No it is not a dream!

Marathonas is the name of a settlement about 5 kilometres from Aegina Town.  It is found by following the coast road south and is easy to get to by bicycle or bus if you do not have a car.  The area is a popular choice for holiday homes being close to one of the best beaches on Aegina and enjoying very good views across to the island of Moni and the Peloponnese.  However, it remains a relatively small beach area which has not been spoiled by over-development and is an understandable first choice for many visitors.

There are two main beach areas in Marathonas.  The beach where a greater choice of tavernas and cafes can be found is where you will arrive first if travelling from Aegina Town.  There is enough choice here to provide variety for a week long stay.  Two coffee shops are located with seating on the beach where you can enjoy frappé or ice-cream.  There are about 5 tavernas in and around the beach where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine.  In the summer it is possible to enjoy an evening meal on the beach.  There are also sun-beds and umbrellas available to hire for those who enjoy sunbathing.  One of the best holiday experiences is to sit on the beach at sun-down where the view is truly magical.

The second beach at Marathonas is found by travelling further along the road (approximately 400 meters).  This beach is more open and again you will find clean sand and waters.  There are sun beds for hire and a canteen from which you can buy cold drinks.

Over the last 7 years or so we have seen improvements to the facilities available at Marathonas.  You will now find a bakery (open during the summer months), a souvlaki takeaway, and a mini-market.

Marathonas is a good choice for a holiday base if you look forward to spending alot of time on the beach.  Within easy reach of Aegina Town and Perdika it is possible to break up your stay with trips in either direction along the coast road.  If staying elsewhere on the island then Marathonas deserves at least a day visit simply because it is one of the best swimming spots on the island.
