When you drive from Aegina town towards Perdika, halfway you will pass the beach of Marathonas. This organised beach is one of the most visited beaches on the island. It is sandy and the water is shallow, because of this it is a popular beach for families with small kids.
You can rent sunbeds, umbrellas & canoes at the cantina of Dimitris, you can enjoy your frappe coffee at the shaded terrace of Akrogialia, La Palma and Ammos are serving a a variety of Greek and International food & drinks from the early morning until late at night and are offering sunbeds for FREE to their guests. Next to Ammos, you can eat under the shade of the trees at Tasos taverna and enjoy Greek traditional food . If you walk a little bit further south, you will find the Greek taverna Ostria with tables under the trees on the beach and taverna Stratigos with a huge covered terrace and a small beach area next to the terrace.
Those who are looking for accommodation on Marathonas beach or close to the beach, there is a variety available:
1 hotel, various studios & apartments and some private rentals.
Marathonas is really busy during the summer months but if you arrive early in the morning (around 9:00) you will have the beach to yourself until 11:00 when most of the people arrive. Those arriving early, can also enjoy the beautiful blue colours of the sea. When the sky is clear, you can enjoy the view towards Moni island on your left with Methana behind it, and more in front you can see the island of Agistri with the Peloponnese in the background. In the summer months the sun sets is between 20:00 and 21:00 and they are stunning! It is really worthwhile to be on the beach around that time. Strangely enough most Greeks leave before, to get home and get ready for the night ..... In the autumn you can experience the most spectacular sunsets when the sun sets behind the island of Moni.
Beachlife on Marathonas starts at Greek Easter when the beach restaurants open for the first time. At the beginning of June, the entire beach is fully operating with all sunbeds and umbrellas in place. The season finishes at the end of October and the taverna's Ostria and Stratigos may be open during the winter weekends.
